We are now in the beginning days of a new year. Have you ever thought about where we get our 24 hour days from? When did a day begin and how long has it always been? The Bible will tell me so:
Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” AV
As we have seen before in this series the Authority of Scripture shows us that God created the heaven and the earth, when did that happen? In the beginning! God is eternal and exists outside of time so time didn’t exist until he created it in the beginning. So that is when a day came into existence.
So how long was that day when God first started creating?
Now here is where some believers and unbelievers stray from the Authority of Scripture either by influence of the secular world or under the influence of the prince of this earth and try and prove that the days of creation were billions of years old or there is a gap of billions of years between chapters of early Genesis. Why the deception occurs is because Satan tries to undermine God’s word like he always has even from the beginning in the Garden of Eden.
The first chapter of Genesis was written by Moses through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Those words were written in Hebrew. The Hebrew word for day is “Yom”. In every occurrence in the Bible when a number is associated with the word Yom it means a 24 day. Just like the day you are experiencing as you read this. During the creation week God said that there was evening and morning of the first/second/third/fourth/fifth/sixth Yom! God from the beginning associates an evening and then a morning as a day. The Hebrews began their day in the evening and ended it 24 hours later as God stated the evening and the morning were the day. Turn it around and when you experience a morning then an evening and are back to a morning did you just experience a 24 hour day? Yes you most certainly did.
What proof is there from the Scripture that Yom is 24 hours?
Proverbs 30:5 “Every word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.” AV
The Bible can be read and understood plainly. There are no secret codes or meanings so everyone can understand Scripture as it is written.
Genesis 1:16 “And God made two great lights; the greater to rule the day, and the lesser to rule the night: he made the stars also.” AV
The plain reading shows that God made the greater light (the sun) to rule the day or half a Yom – 12 hours and the lesser light (the moon) to rule the other half of a Yom – a 12 hour night. In proper math (not new so called math) 12 + 12 = 24!
Exodus 20:11 “for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” AV
Moses wrote the above verse and clearly states a week of Yoms, remember real math: 6 + 1 = 7!
And from the ultimate authority God himself:
John 11:9 “Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.” AV
So Jesus stated Himself that the day ruled over by the sun is 12 hours! Add in a night, 24 hours!
Our seven day week has no basis in astronomy or superstition or anything else except God’s blessings. A month is the time the moon orbits the earth. A year is the time that the earth orbits the sun. The week? Provided to us from God so we work six days and rest on the seventh. The creation week!
In conclusion, in this new year of days resolve to have a personal relationship with your Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. At the end of days, you will have eternal life with God on the new earth.
